(0) Comments

Master’s Degree Program
Background

The AUN/SEED-Net Project with support from Japan International
Cooperation Agency (JICA) provides scholarships to highly qualified
young teaching staff and graduating students/young graduates (i.e.,
potential future faculty staff) of Member Institutions to acquire
master’s degrees in the following nine engineering fields at
respective Host Institutions in other countries:

* Chemical Engineering (at De La Salle University)
* Civil Engineering (at Chulalongkorn University)
* Electrical and Electronics Engineering (at Chulalongkorn University)
* Environmental Engineering (at University of Philippines-Diliman)
* Geological Engineering (at Gadjah Mada University)
* Information and Communication Technology (at King Mongkut’s
Institute of Technology, Ladkrabang)
* Manufacturing Engineering (at University of Malaya)
* Materials Engineering (at Universiti Sains Malaysia)
* Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering (at Institute of
Technology Bandung).

In order for AUN/SEED-Net students to produce high quality thesis
research of international standard and to ensure the completion of the
master’s degree within two years, AUN/SEED-Net provides vital support,
in terms of financial and academic, through joint thesis research
supervision, to AUN/SEED-Net Master’s students at all Host
Institutions. The joint thesis research supervision will be carried
out through the Collaborative Research Program, which has been created
by each Host Institution for a few well-defined research themes (or
research umbrellas) in consultation with Japanese Field Coordinating
University, each of which is a collection of interrelated and
progressively conducted thesis research topics. Each AUN/SEED-Net
student (including doctoral sandwich student) shall conduct thesis
research under one of these research themes.

Besides, according to AUN/SEED-Net Students’ Mobility scheme which is
promoted to enable students to benefit educationally and culturally
from the experience of learning at other Member Institution(s),
Master’s students may be supported to take a course(s) or conduct
research at other Member Institution(s) for a short period. Students
are advised to consult with their advisors and Host Institution on the
necessity, possibility and procedures of their mobility.

Those who complete this Master’s Degree Program with outstanding
thesis research are encouraged to pursue a doctoral degree in one of
the above nine fields either at Japanese Supporting Universities under
the “Doctoral Degree Program in Japan”, or at Host Institutions (in
Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand) under the
“Doctoral Degree Sandwich Program” with co-supervision by Japanese
professors, or at the two Singaporean universities (NTU & NUS) under
“Doctoral Degree Program in Singapore” .

Moreover, Master’s students who prove outstanding performance and feel
interested in upgrading to doctoral level with maximum scholarship
period of five (5) years could consult with their Host Institution on
the possibility and requirements of being upgraded. Interested
students are advised to inform their Sending Institutions in advance
for their agreement.

Objectives

1. To increase the number of high quality Master’s degree holders in
engineering at Member Institutions which would be necessary to
contribute to a sustainable industrial development of ASEAN countries.

2.
To strengthen the Master’s degree support at the Host Institutions so
that the production of high quality Master’s degree holders in
engineering needed for the region is materialized within the region in
collaboration with the Member Institutions and Japanese Supporting
Universities.

3.
To strengthen human networking among teaching staff of Member
Institutions and Japanese Supporting Universities.

Target Number of Scholarships
Around 45 scholarships for each Japanese Fiscal Year will be
supported (approximately five scholarships for each host field at Host
Institutions in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand).
Coverage of Scholarships
The scholarships cover tuition fees, living expenses, health
insurance, visa fee and airport tax, and a round-trip air ticket, in
accordance with the AUN/SEED-Net Project regulations.
Commencement and Duration of Scholarships

The commencement of scholarship should be within the respective
Japanese Fiscal Year; that is, awarded students should commence their
study within April of the year– March of the next year.

The duration of the scholarship is strictly two years, counting from
the day of arrival at a Host Institution. Students who need more than
two years to acquire a degree will be expected to self-finance during
period of extension.

Note: The AUN/SEED-Net Project, in consultation with the Host
Institution, will terminate the award of any student who fails to
maintain satisfactory progress at the Host Institution.

Scholarship Allocation
Although even distribution across nine fields and across Sending
Institutions are taken into consideration, our scholarship allocation
needs to be based on first-in-first-served policy; that is, depending
on the submission of admission results from Host Institutions.
Submission Deadline of the Application Form

Applications for the Master’s Degree Program should be submitted, in
printed forms, to the AUN/SEED-Net Project by February 15 each year.

Belgium Jobs: Faculty of Engineering of the Ghent University 2009 2010

1/20/2009

(0) Comments

Several fully funded Ph.D. positions in machine learning, speech recognition, handwriting recognition and robotics are available at the Reservoir Lab
(http://reslab.elis.ugent.be) and the Speech Lab (http://speech.elis.ugent.be), both part of the Electronics and Information Systems Department, faculty of Engineering of the Ghent University, Belgium (http://ugent.be).

Project
Current state-of-the-art speech & handwriting recognition systems still perform much worse than human beings who can effortlessly decode the speech or
handwriting of most people, even in fairly adverse conditions (e.g. the presence of noise in case of speech recognition). The fact that the human brain works so efficiently is owed to its self-organizing capacity, its deeply hierarchical approach, its adoption of unsupervised and supervised learning strategies, its capacity to adapt almost instantly to new circumstances, etc. Why not try to build an automatic speech recognizer and handwriting recognition engine that incorporates the same principles? This is exactly what we will do in two recently approved projects:

* ?Self-organized Recurrent Neural Learning for Language Processing?
(ORGANIC), funded by
the European Commission within the 7th Framework Program. Details
about the project can
be found at the preliminary reservoir computing website
(http://reservoir-computing.org).
* ?Reservoir Computing for auditory pattern recognition? (RECAP),
funded by the Research
Program of the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO).

The research concerns the investigation of architectures and
algorithms for the efficient
learning of large recurrent neural networks based on the Reservoir
Computing concept
(where only a linear readout layer is learned in a supervised way
whereas the recurrent
connections are fixed or trained in an unsupervised way). Important
research topics are
the unsupervised learning of a large hierarchy of recurrent
sub-layers, and the
integration of various adaptation techniques. The application domains
are off-line
handwriting recognition, speech recognition and various aspects of
robotics (such as
robot localization, motion control, …). So far we were able to
demonstrate that
reservoirs can give rise to the robust recognition of digits spoken or
written in
isolation, but now we want to demonstrate that they can also yield
robust recognition of
continuous speech and handwriting (large vocabulary).

Requirements
Candidates should have a Masters degree in Electrical, Computer or
Physics Engineering;cor in Physics, Mathematics or Computer Science. A good knowledge of English is essential.
No professional background is required, but the ideal candidates have
some acquaintancecwith Machine Learning, programming (Python, Matlab, …), statistics, signal processing, speech recognition, control engineering, or robotics.

What we offer
We offer an opportunity to perform at least three years of research in a new promising domain, and to get a doctoral degree in this domain. There will be
ample opportunities for establishing international contacts (stays at partner
universities, participation to international conferences). As an employee of the university you will receive a competitive salary (starting with a net monthly salary of approximately 1.600 Euro) as well as excellent secondary benefits (holiday allowance, etc.). Belgium was ranked first on the ?Best Countries for Academic Research? worldwide list (The Scientist, 2007), and Ghent University was appointed second place on the ?Best Places to Work in Academia?non-US list (The Scientist, 2006).

Application and timing
If you are interested in one of the Ph.D. vacancies, please send in
electronic format to
Benjamin Schrauwen (Benjamin ?dot? Schrauwen ?at? UGent ?dot? be): a
detailed curriculum
vitae, a motivation letter, your course program, your grades, two letters of
recommendation and, if applicable, a publication list and selected
publications. Do also mention your topics of preferences within the projects (e.g. robotics, speech, no preference, etc.).
Some positions start on April 1, 2009, others in September 2009, meaning that persons who expect to graduate in July 2009 are welcome to apply.
Applications which are received before February 1, 2009 get priority.

With kind regards,

Benjamin Schrauwen and Jean-Pierre Martens
